Masa Kalashtami (or Masika Kalashtami) falls on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the waning (Krishna) Paksha each month. It is dedicated to Lord Kalabhairava — the fierce manifestation of Shiva who is the guardian of time. Observing this fast is believed to remove fear, grant protection, and bestow strength. Kashi Kalabhairav Jayanti in Margashirsha is the most important day, but the monthly observance is equally meritorious.
