Muhurthas printed in most online panchangs or print panchangs are calculated for India and are very general purpose. Even within India, they may not apply to your specific situation. Outside India, they are simply not valid.
Many people believe they can subtract the time difference from an Indian muhurtha to get their local muhurtha. This is completely wrong. Muhurtha is calculated based on local sunrise, local longitude and latitude — these change everything.
Important points for muhurtha calculation:
- Local sunrise and sunset: Muhurtha is heavily dependent on local events. Countries at higher latitudes have sunrise as early as 4:00 AM in summer or as late as 8:15 AM in winter. On Mondays, Rahukalam starts at 7:30 AM — if sunrise is at 8:15 AM, how can Rahukalam begin before sunrise? Fixed timings don't work.
- Rahukala and similar: Rahukalam, Yamagandam, and Gulika are all computed from local sunrise and sunset. Even fixed rahukalam within India is a simplification; using it abroad is incorrect.
- Lagna Shuddhi: Lagna Shuddhi is the foundation of muhurtha. It requires preparing a kundli at the exact muhurtha time using the local longitude and latitude. You cannot convert to Indian time and prepare the kundli there.
- Other factors: Rasi bala, Tara bala, Surya bala, Guru bala, Agnivasa, Udayastha, Chandra mukham (for Graha Pravesha) and other details must all be checked for your specific location.
Four universal muhurthas valid worldwide:
There are only four general-purpose muhurthas that are valid anywhere in the world, based on the tithi prevailing at local sunrise:
