🙏 Sutaka Kala

Sutaka for a lunar eclipse begins 3 Prahara (approx. 9 hours) before the eclipse. For children, the elderly and the ill, it begins 1½ hours before the start of the eclipse. Unlike Sutak for solar eclipses, the lunar Sutaka is shorter.

🌿 Chandragrahana Vedha

Cooked food is considered impure from the start of Sutaka. Place Darbha (Kusha) grass in food and water containers. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama, Ganga Sthuti, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or your Ishta Devata mantra during the eclipse.

🪔 After the Eclipse

Take a bath (snan) immediately after the eclipse ends (Moksha). Donate (Daan) money, food or sesame seeds with water — Tila Daan is especially auspicious after a lunar eclipse. Perform puja and break the fast.

✨ Penumbral Eclipses

A penumbral lunar eclipse is barely perceptible to the naked eye. Most dharmashastra texts require Sutaka only for Partial and Total lunar eclipses where the Moon enters the Umbra (Bimba-grahana). Consult a learned pandit for your situation.

Chandra Grahan · Sacred Knowledge

Lunar Eclipse in Hinduism — Chandra Grahan

A lunar eclipse — Chandra Grahan (चंद्र ग्रहण) — occurs on a full moon night (Purnima) when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon's bright face. In Hindu cosmology, this is the moment when Rahu or Ketu — the shadowy lunar nodes — are said to "swallow" Chandra, causing the Moon to darken and eventually turn a coppery red. This "Blood Moon" is the most dramatic celestial event in popular astrology.

The ancient text Surya Siddhanta and the Aryabhatiya describe lunar eclipse mechanics with precision comparable to modern calculations. Aryabhata (5th century CE) correctly identified that eclipses are caused by the Moon entering Earth's shadow — a rational astronomical explanation given centuries before the Western scientific mainstream reached the same conclusion.

Types of Lunar Eclipses

Chandragrahana and Astrological Significance

The Moon (Chandra) governs the mind (manas), emotions, fertility, water bodies, and one's mother in Jyotisha (Vedic astrology). An eclipse of the Moon is therefore considered a particularly potent — and in some respects inauspicious — event for matters related to these domains. Eclipses occurring in a person's natal Moon nakshatra or the nakshatra of a major dasha lord are considered significant in Parashari Jyotisha.

Safe Viewing

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye throughout its duration — no special filters are required. The Moon reflects only sunlight and emits no harmful radiation even at maximum totality. In fact, Total Lunar Eclipses are among the most breathtaking naked-eye celestial events visible from anywhere on the night side of Earth.

— Bījopanayana Bhāṣya · Siddhānta Śiromaṇi tradition

Lunar eclipse has a religious importance in hinduism, Sutaka (Ashaucha)n starts before 4 prahara for Total lunar eclipse, if there is a moonrising during eclipse then one shouldn't eat anything from previous day otherwise if the moon has already risen then sutaka is only for 4 prahara for Total Eclipse and 3 prahara for partial eclipse, no sutaka ashaucha for penumbral eclipse. if there are clouds observe eclipse based on the timing when eclipse begin and ends.

One shouldn't eat during eclipse, one should avoid eating during eclipse and eclipse sutaka time frame (However, this is not applicable to pregnant and patients under medical treatment, or people with medical conditions), after the eclipse take bath, and if possible try to donate money, etc to needy people or related organization.
