Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya — the third day of Vaishakha's bright half — is one of the rarest tithis in the Hindu calendar: a Swayam-siddha muhurta, a self-proved auspicious moment that requires no external calculation. Whatever is started, given, or sown on this day bears akshaya phala — undying, inexhaustible fruit.

The Puranas record that on this day the Satya Yuga began, Devi Annapurna appeared at Varanasi, the Ganges descended to Earth, and Lord Parashurama was born to the sage Jamadagni. Lord Kubera received his celestial riches on Akshaya Tritiya; Lord Surya gave Yudhishtira the inexhaustible Akshaya Patra vessel from which food never ran out — a direct echo of the tithi's name.

The day is celebrated across India as Akha Teej. Gold and silver bought today are believed to grow and multiply; more deeply the tradition points to charitable giving — providing food, water, umbrellas, and footwear to those in need during summer — as the most enduring investment one can make.

In Jainism, this day commemorates Rishabhanatha (Adinatha), the first Tirthankara, breaking a year-long fast with sugarcane juice. The day is therefore the most sacred date on the Jain calendar.

अक्षय्यमस्तु ते पुण्यं देहि मे शुभमव्ययम्। धनधान्यसमृद्धिं च कुरुष्व मम केशव।।
Akshayyam astu te punyam dehi me shubham avyayam, dhana-dhanya-samriddhim ca kurusva mama Keshava.
"May your merit be imperishable; grant me undying auspiciousness, O Keshava — abundance of wealth and grain."
— Traditional Akshaya Tritiya prayer
Tradition & Practice
Swayam-Siddha Tithi
Only a handful of tithis are self-sanctified. Akshaya Tritiya is always auspicious — even if it coincides with an eclipse or inauspicious nakshatra, it overrides them all.
🏅
Gold Purchase
Buying gold, silver, or copper utensils today symbolises lasting prosperity. The tradition is traced to Kubera receiving his wealth and Surya gifting the Akshaya Patra.
🌊
Ganga Avataran
The Puranas say the Ganges descended to Earth on this very tithi. Bathing in a river or performing jala-daan (giving water) carries extraordinary merit today.
🎁
Dana (Charitable Giving)
Food, water, fans, umbrellas, footwear, and buttermilk given in the summer heat multiply to eternal merit. No act of giving done today is ever lost.
📿
New Beginnings
Weddings, business inaugurations, starting a new house, sowing seeds — all begun on Akshaya Tritiya are believed to grow without diminishing.
🕉️
Parashurama Jayanthi
Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, was born on this day. In some traditions Parashurama puja and the reading of his stories are part of the celebration.
