About

Annamalai Deepam (Smartha)

Annamalai Deepam is the Smartha tradition's observance of Karthigai Deepam — a festival of lights marking the day Krittika nakshatra is present at sunset during the Sun's transit through Vrischika (Scorpio) rasi. Lamps are lit at dusk in homes and temples, continuing the same Karthikai masam tradition of light shared across Tamil Nadu.

Because the moon's roughly 27.3-day cycle through the nakshatras doesn't divide evenly into the Sun's roughly 29-30 day transit through a rasi, Krittika nakshatra can occasionally touch sunset twice within the same Vrischika transit — once shortly after the Sun enters Vrischika, and again shortly before it leaves. The Smartha tradition resolves this by preferring the day nearer the Sun's departure from Vrischika, unless that day carries its own affliction, in which case the earlier, unafflicted day is kept instead.

This determination is independent of the Vaishnava Karthigai Deepam calculation elsewhere on this site — the two traditions can, in some years, fall on different civil days.

दीपं ज्योतिः परं ब्रह्म दीपं सर्वतमोऽपहम्। दीपेन साध्यते सर्वं संध्याकाले दिवा सह।।
Dīpaṃ jyotiḥ paraṃ brahma dīpaṃ sarvatamo'paham, dīpena sādhyate sarvaṃ sandhyākāle divā saha.
"The lamp is the supreme light, the lamp dispels all darkness — by the lamp all is accomplished, at twilight as in the day."
— Traditional invocation recited at Deepam lighting
Tradition & Practice
🪔
Krittika at Sunset
The Smartha determination centres on the day Krittika nakshatra — the Pleiades star cluster — is present at the exact moment of sunset, during the Sun's transit through Vrischika.
Sun in Vrischika
The whole search is bounded to the Sun's transit through Vrischika (Scorpio) rasi, the solar month corresponding to Tamil Karthikai.
🔁
When Krittika Touches Sunset Twice
The lunar and solar cycles don't align exactly, so Krittika can touch sunset twice in one Vrischika transit. The day nearer the Sun's departure from Vrischika is preferred.
Affliction Check
If the later of two Krittika-at-sunset days carries its own affliction, the earlier, unafflicted day is used instead.
🪔
Smartha vs Vaishnava
This Smartha determination is independent of the Vaishnava Karthigai Deepam calculation — the two can fall on different civil days in some years.
