About

Chaitra Navaratri

Chaitra Navaratri — also called Vasant Navaratri, the Spring Nine Nights — begins on the first day of Chaitra's bright fortnight (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada), which coincides with Gudi Padwa (Ugadi) and marks the Hindu New Year in most traditions. For nine days and nine nights, the goddess Durga is worshipped in her nine forms: the Navadurga.

The festival begins with Ghatasthapana (also called Kalash Sthapana) — installing a sacred pot (kalash) filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, as the symbolic seat of the goddess. The Ghatasthapana muhurta is highly specific: it must be performed during the first one-third of the day on Pratipada, and not during the Chitra nakshatra period. This is why the exact timing from panchang matters greatly.

Each of the nine days is dedicated to one of Devi's nine forms: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. The ninth day, Rama Navami, is also the birthday of Lord Rama — making it doubly auspicious. Devotees conclude the fast on Navami with Kanya Puja — feeding nine young girls as embodiments of the nine Devis.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
Ya devi sarva-bhutesu shakti-rupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.
"Salutations to the goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Shakti — salutations, salutations, salutations again and again."
— Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati), Chapter 11
Tradition & Practice
🏺
Ghatasthapana
The festival opens with Ghatasthapana — placing a sacred clay pot as the seat of Devi. The precise muhurta matters: it must fall in the first third of the day, avoiding Chitra nakshatra.
🌸
Vasant (Spring) Navaratri
Spring Navaratri coincides with the Hindu New Year (Gudi Padwa / Ugadi). The goddess is invoked at the moment the new year begins, setting its spiritual tone for the months ahead.
📖
Durga Saptashati
The Devi Mahatmyam (700 verses on Devi's glory) is recited over the nine days — ideally all 700 verses, or the key chapters (Madhu-Kaitabha vadha, Mahishasura vadha) on specific days.
🌺
Navadurga — Nine Forms
Each day venerates one of Devi's nine aspects: Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri on the ninth day.
🙏
Kanya Puja
On Ashtami or Navami, nine young girls (Kanya) are invited home, their feet washed, and they are worshipped and fed as living embodiments of the nine Devis.
☀️
Rama Navami
The ninth day of Chaitra Navaratri is Rama Navami — Lord Rama's birthday. Temples hold special abhisheka (ritual bathing) of Rama at the noon hour when he was born.
