About

Dattatreya Jayanthi

Dattatreya Jayanthi celebrates the birth of Lord Dattatreya on the full moon night of the Margashirsha month. Dattatreya is unique in Hindu theology: he is the combined avatar of the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — appearing simultaneously in a single form. His iconography shows three faces (the three gods), six arms (two each), and four dogs (the four Vedas) at his feet, with a cow (Kamadhenu) standing behind him.

The name Dattatreya means "gift of Atri" — he was born to the sage Atri and his devoted wife Anasuya. When the wives of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva grew jealous of Anasuya's fidelity and virtues, they sent their husbands to test her. Unable to break her devotion, the three gods merged into a single infant — Dattatreya — and were born to her as her son.

Lord Dattatreya is the original guru in Hindu tradition — the Adi Guru. The Avadhuta Gita records his teachings on non-dualism and liberation. He is said to have had 24 gurus ranging from the earth and sky to a prostitute and a python — teaching that wisdom can be found in every aspect of creation. He is especially revered in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, and by the Nath sampradaya (the tradition of Gorakshanath).

त्रिमूर्तिं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिलोकनाथं ईश्वरम्। ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाकारं दत्तात्रेयं नमाम्यहम्।।
Trimurtim trigunakaram trilokanatham Ishvaram, Brahma-Vishnu-Shivakaram Dattatreyam namamy aham.
"I bow to Dattatreya — of the three forms, the three gunas, lord of the three worlds, embodying Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva."
— Datta Stuti
Tradition & Practice
🔱
Trimurti Avatar
Dattatreya is the only combined form of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. His three heads represent creation, sustenance, and dissolution. Worshipping him is said to invoke all three cosmic functions at once.
👨
Son of Anasuya
Born to sage Atri and the celebrated Anasuya — whose name means "without jealousy" — Dattatreya's very birth was a cosmic test of a devoted wife's virtue passed with perfect grace.
📚
24 Gurus
Dattatreya famously learned from 24 diverse gurus: the earth, water, fire, wind, sky, the moon, the sun, a pigeon, a python, the ocean, a moth, a bee, an elephant, a fish, a deer, a courtesan, and more.

Avadhuta Gita
The Avadhuta Gita contains Dattatreya's teachings on Advaita (non-dual) philosophy — among the most direct and radical expressions of the teaching that the self and Brahman are one.

Sacred Iconography
Dattatreya's iconography includes three faces, six arms, four dogs, and a cow. The dogs represent the four Vedas; the cow is Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling divine cow.
🏔️
Nath Tradition
Dattatreya is the supreme guru of the Nath sampradaya and is venerated by Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta traditions alike. Major centres of worship are at Gangapur (Karnataka) and Narsobachi Wadi (Maharashtra).
