About

Divaaso

Divaaso — also called Ashadhi Amavasya — is the new moon day of the Gujarati month of Ashadh, observed across Gujarat as a day of rest and reflection marking the close of the old agricultural half-year and the approach of the monsoon-season Chaturmas period.

Households traditionally avoid starting new ventures or travel on this day, and it is common for families to gather, cook special food, and pause the working week — the word 'diwaso' itself carries the sense of a day set aside from ordinary activity.

Because Amavasya is a tithi that can begin or end at any point during the day, its exact civil-day attribution follows a traditional rule: the day Amavasya rules sunrise counts as Divaaso only if the tithi continues for at least three muhurtas past that sunrise; if it ends sooner, Divaaso shifts to the previous day instead.
