About

Geetha Jayanthi

Geetha Jayanthi falls on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi — the eleventh day of Margashirsha's bright fortnight — and commemorates the day Lord Krishna recited the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, approximately 5,100 years ago. This is the birthday of scripture itself: the moment when 700 timeless verses were first spoken.

The Bhagavad Gita — "Song of the Lord" — is embedded in the Mahabharata's Bhishma Parva. Arjuna, overwhelmed by grief at the prospect of fighting his teachers and kinsmen, lays down his bow. Krishna, his charioteer, responds with 18 chapters of teaching that span the full spectrum of Hindu philosophy: karma yoga (the yoga of action), jnana yoga (the yoga of knowledge), bhakti yoga (the yoga of devotion), and raja yoga (the yoga of meditation).

The day is also called Mokshada Ekadashi — the Ekadashi that gives liberation (moksha). A fast observed on this Ekadashi is believed to free the souls of departed ancestors. Devotees typically spend the day reciting the Gita (all 18 chapters or key sections like Chapter 2), attending discourses, and donating copies of the scripture.

In Kurukshetra itself, Geetha Jayanthi is celebrated with great ceremony at the site where Krishna is said to have spoken the Gita — near the Brahma Sarovar tank — with all-night recitations and lamp offerings.

सर्वधर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज। अहं त्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः।।
Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja, aham tvam sarva-papebhyo mokshayishyami ma shucah.
"Abandon all varieties of dharma and simply surrender unto Me alone. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions; do not fear."
— Bhagavad Gita 18.66 — the Charama Shloka
Tradition & Practice
📖
The Gita Speaks
The Bhagavad Gita was spoken by Krishna to Arjuna at the start of the Kurukshetra war. Its 700 verses across 18 chapters constitute the most influential philosophical text in Hindu history.
⚔️
The Setting
On the morning of the war, Arjuna sees grandsires, teachers, and cousins arrayed against him and puts down his bow in despair. Krishna's response — the entire Gita — is given before the first arrow is loosed.
🕊️
Three Paths
The Gita synthesises three paths to liberation: Karma Yoga (selfless action), Jnana Yoga (self-knowledge), and Bhakti Yoga (loving devotion) — declaring all three valid routes to the same goal.
🙏
Mokshada Ekadashi
This Ekadashi is called Mokshada — liberating — because fasting on this day frees both the devotee and their departed ancestors from the cycle of birth and death.
🏛️
Kurukshetra Celebration
The site where Krishna recited the Gita at Kurukshetra holds a grand Geetha Jayanthi celebration every year: all-night recitations, lamp-lit processions, and discourses by scholars from across India.
📿
Recitation Practice
Devotees traditionally recite the entire 18 chapters on this day — roughly 2-3 hours. The final verse of each chapter ends with: "Thus spoke Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, to Arjuna."
