Gowri Tritiya, observed on the third day (Tritiya) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Bhadrapada, is one of the most important women's festivals in Karnataka and to a somewhat lesser extent in Maharashtra. In Karnataka it is known as Swarna Gowri Vratam — the vow of the golden Gowri — and it is the single most widely observed festival by married Kannada women. On this day, the day immediately before Ganesh Chaturthi, Goddess Gowri — the golden form of Parvati — visits the homes of her devotees. She arrives first, before her son Ganesha, just as in real life a mother precedes her son in entering a new home.
The ritual preparation begins well in advance. Married women procure a Gowri idol made of gold, silver, or turmeric — the golden color of the idol referencing the epithet Swarna Gowri, "the golden-hued Parvati." The idol is installed in the home on a decorated platform (mantapa), surrounded by banana plants, mango leaves, flowers, kumkum, and turmeric. The priest or the senior woman of the household performs the avahana (invocation) drawing Goddess Gowri into the idol from the heavens. Throughout the day, women offer sixteen forms of worship (shodashopachara), chant her names, and sing traditional Kannada songs (beesu) in her praise. Special foods including holige (sweet flatbread), kadubu (steamed rice dumplings), and panaka (jaggery drink) are prepared and offered.
The festival carries deep significance beyond ritual. Swarna Gowri Vratam is, at its heart, a celebration of the wife-mother figure — Parvati herself, who persevered through tapas (austerity) to win Shiva as her husband and went on to become the loving mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya. Women who observe this vrat pray for the long life and health of their husbands, for the prosperity of their households, and for the welfare of their children. The day after Gowri's visit, Ganesha arrives — and on Ganesh Chaturthi, the two deities are worshipped together. After the conclusion of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations (anywhere from 1.5 to 10 days later), Gowri is also ceremonially immersed or sent back to her divine abode, mirroring the immersion of Ganesha — mother and son departing together as they arrived together.

The central ritual is the installation of the Swarna Gowri idol — an image of Parvati made of gold, silver, or turmeric. "Swarna" means gold, reflecting the golden hue associated with Parvati in her benevolent, auspicious form. The idol is placed on a decorated mantapa and invoked with the full shodashopachara (16-step) puja.

Swarna Gowri Vratam is arguably the most important women's festival in Karnataka, observed by virtually every married Kannada Hindu woman regardless of caste or region. Daughters return to their parents' homes to observe it, similar to how women return home for Diwali or Navratri in other states — it is both a religious and a family reunion occasion.

The Day Before Ganesh Arrives
Gowri Tritiya falls on Bhadra Shukla Tritiya, exactly one day before Ganesh Chaturthi (the 4th). The sequencing is deliberate and symbolic: the mother arrives before the son. Parvati enters the home first, blesses the household, and then makes way for Ganesha's grand arrival the following day. Together, they occupy the home for the Chaturthi period.

Gold, Turmeric, and Jewelry
Gold and turmeric are the colors of this festival. Women wear their finest gold jewelry, and turmeric is central to the ritual — rubbed on the idol, mixed into kumkum, and used to make the turmeric Gowri idol when a metal one is not available. The connection between gold, turmeric, and feminine auspiciousness runs deep in South Indian tradition.

Dashavatara Puja and Vrat Katha
As part of the puja, married women observe a vrat (vow) and listen to the Gowri Vrat Katha — stories of how devout women received Parvati's blessings for marital happiness and children's welfare. The Dashavatara (ten avatars of Vishnu) puja is also sometimes incorporated, reflecting the syncretic Shaiva-Vaishnava nature of Karnataka's religious culture.

Return of Gowri — Visarjana
After Ganesh Chaturthi ends, Goddess Gowri is also ceremonially sent back (visarjana) — either immersed in water along with Ganesha or placed back in the puja room with a farewell ritual. This mirrors the emotional farewell of Ganesh Visarjana: the devotee prays for Gowri to return next year and to continue blessing the household with her golden grace.
