What is Guru Astha?

When the Preceptor of the Gods Turns Away

In Vedic astronomy, Guru — the planet Jupiter, regent of wisdom, dharma, and auspiciousness — undergoes two profound astronomical phases each year: Astha (combustion) when Jupiter draws so close to the Sun that it disappears into the solar glare, and Udaya (heliacal rising) when it emerges again before dawn.

The Shāstras call this period Guru Modhyami (also Guru Lopa or Tara Astha). When Bṛhaspati — teacher of the Devas — vanishes from the visible sky, tradition holds that his guiding influence is temporarily withdrawn from the world below.

गुरौ मध्यगते सूर्ये यदा गुरुः अस्तं याति ।
तदा विवाहादि कर्म कर्तव्यं न विचक्षणैः ॥
"When Guru enters the middle of the Sun — when Jupiter sets into the solar rays — wise and discerning people should not perform marriages and other auspicious rites."
— Dharmaśāstra / Muhūrta tradition

Practically, this means that from the day Jupiter sets behind the Sun (Astha) until it rises again before dawn (Udaya), traditional Hindu almanacs treat the period as inauspicious for new beginnings. The interval lasts roughly 30–40 days per year.

What the Tradition Says

Avoid During Astha
Vivāha (marriage), Upanayana (sacred thread), Gṛhāpraveśa (housewarming), Devatā Pratiṣṭhā (consecration of deities). Traditional Dharmaśāstra advises against initiating these sacred rites while Guru is hidden.
Continue as Normal
Daily pūjā, sandhyāvandana, vratas, and regular religious observances continue unaffected. Existing commitments and emergency rites (Antyeṣṭi, etc.) are not restricted. Guru Astha applies only to new auspicious saṃskāras.
When Guru Rises Again
At Guru Udaya — when Jupiter rises heliacally — the auspicious period resumes. Traditional almanacs mark this day prominently and priests often perform a special Guru Graha Pūjā to welcome the return of the planetary preceptor.
Scientific Basis
These dates are computed from NASA JPL ephemeris data using precise heliocentric and geocentric coordinates for Jupiter. The setting and rising thresholds follow the traditional arcus visionis for Bṛhaspati.

The astronomical precision behind these calculations matters greatly. Unlike older manual almanacs that sometimes differ by a day or two, Drishyaganit Panchang computes the exact moment Jupiter's elongation from the Sun crosses the traditional visibility threshold — ensuring your muhurtha planning is based on the actual sky.
