Hala Shashti 2025

Hala Shashti — Hal Shashthi, Balarama Shashti — falls on the sixth day of Bhadrapada's dark fortnight, celebrated primarily in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. It is the birthday of Lord Balarama, Krishna's elder brother — whose weapon is the hala (plough) and who is the god of agriculture and strength.

On this day, mothers fast for the longevity and prosperity of their sons, in much the same spirit as Karwa Chauth (for husbands). The fast begins at sunrise and is broken only after worshipping the hala-shashthi deity at sunset. Women observe strict rules: they do not touch any implement made with ox-work (plough-tilled grain, iron tools associated with tilling) and eat only foods grown without ploughing — wild fruits, roots, water chestnuts, and buffalo milk products.

The festival also carries a touching agricultural message: the earth rests on Hala Shashti. Since Balarama carries the plough, ploughing the earth on his birthday is considered disrespectful. Farmers symbolically give the earth a day of rest, echoing ancient soil-conservation wisdom. Many stories in local tradition describe Balarama himself ploughing rivers, redirecting the Yamuna, and using his mighty hala to reshape the landscape.
