About

Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan — Chhoti Holi, Small Holi — is performed on the full-moon night of Phalguna. At dusk or after Bhadra kaal has passed, communities gather around a large bonfire to burn an effigy of Holika, the demoness who was destroyed trying to kill the devotee Prahlada. The bonfire represents the triumph of devotion over evil, and the burning away of our own inner demons.

The story: the demon king Hiranyakashipu wanted his son Prahlada to worship him instead of Vishnu, but Prahlada refused. After many failed attempts to kill Prahlada, Hiranyakashipu enlisted his sister Holika, who had a divine boon of immunity from fire. She sat in a pyre holding Prahlada in her lap. But Vishnu's grace protected Prahlada: Holika's boon — which required her to never misuse it — failed, and she burned while Prahlada walked out unharmed.

The Bhadra timing is critical: lighting the fire during Bhadra kaal (a period associated with the shadow-serpent Vishti Karana) is considered inauspicious and potentially harmful. The puja must be performed either before Bhadra begins or after it ends — the exact Pradosh-to-Nishita window without Bhadra is the correct muhurta. This is why the precise time from panchang varies significantly by location.

Families circle the bonfire, offering coconuts, jaggery, and grains. New barley (representing the spring crop) is roasted in the flames. The next morning is Holi — the festival of colours.

असृक्पाभयसंत्रस्तैः कृता त्वं होलि बालिशैः। अतस्त्वां पूजयिष्यामि भूते भूतिप्रदा भव।।
"O Holika, created by foolish demons who were terrified of the power of blood-offerings — therefore I worship you. O cosmic being, be the giver of auspiciousness."

The Bonfire
A large community bonfire is lit in the evening. Families circle it, offering coconut, jaggery, wheat stalks, and new barley to the flames. The ashes are smeared on foreheads as a blessing the next morning.
Bhadra — Critical Timing
Holika Dahan must NOT be performed during Bhadra kaal. This inauspicious period (related to Vishti Karana) varies by location. Only light the fire after Bhadra ends — use this page for your city's exact window.
🌾
New Barley in the Fire
Roasting new spring barley (jau) in the Holika bonfire is a pre-Vedic ritual celebrating the first crop of the year. Roasted grains are eaten and shared as prasad — the earth's first offering of the season.
🙏
Prahlada's Victory
The bonfire re-enacts Holika carrying Prahlada into the fire. Holika burns; Prahlada is saved. The ritual is a reminder that sincere devotion (bhakti) is immune even to fire, even to death.
🌺
Puja Rituals
The Holika puja involves applying fresh cow-dung (gobar) to the bonfire pit, decorating it with mango leaves, and performing arti. The priest lights the fire as the community watches and prays.

Gateway to Holi
Holika Dahan night ends with a late-night celebration. The next morning at dawn Holi (Dhuleti) begins — throwing colours, soaking with water, and visiting neighbours with gulal and sweets.
