About

Jaya Parvati Vrat

Jaya Parvati Vrat — also known as Moti Teej in parts of Gujarat — is observed by women for the wellbeing of their husband (or, for unmarried women, a suitable future husband), dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The vrat begins on Ashadha Shukla Trayodashi and the fast continues for five tithis, through Krishna Dwitiya, breaking (Parana) only on Krishna Tritiya.

The Bhavishyottara Purana details the Jaya-Vijaya Vratas of the Ashadha month dedicated to Durga/Parvati, and the Skanda Purana (Kumarika Khanda) covers the Gauri Vratas observed by young women for marital bliss and a worthy partner — Jaya Parvati Vrat sits within this same devotional family.

The Shaiva Agamas (Kamika, Karana, and Suprabheda) — the ritual manuals for Shiva-Shakti worship — frame this as part of the broader Gauri Vrat / Uma-Maheshwara Vrat tradition, and prescribe the central ritual practice: Ankurarpanam, the sowing of grain seeds in an earthen pot, grown into sprouts (Javara) over the course of the vrat and offered to the Goddess.

Tradition & Practice
🌾
Javara / Ankurarpanam
The vrat's central ritual — sowing grain seeds (wheat/pulses) in an earthen pot at the start of the vrat, tending the sprouts (Javara) as they grow over the five days, and offering them to Goddess Parvati.
🙏
Five-Day Fast
The fast spans Ashadha Shukla Trayodashi through Krishna Dwitiya — five tithis — observed by women for the wellbeing of their husband or a future husband.
🍽
Parana on Krishna Tritiya
The fast is broken (Parana) after sunrise on Krishna Tritiya, once all five days of the vrat have been completed.
📿
Gujarati Observance
Widely observed in Gujarat, where it is also called Moti Teej. Women gather to sing, worship Parvati together, and tend the Javara sprouts through the vrat.
