About

Kajari Teej

Kajari Teej — also called Badi Teej (the big Teej), Satudi Teej, or Bhojaree Teej — falls on the third day of Bhadrapada's dark fortnight and is primarily celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan. It is the third and last of the three monsoon Teej festivals (after Hariyali Teej in Shravana and Haritalika Teej in Bhadrapada Shukla).

The word kajari refers to the songs sung during this festival — the Kajari folk song genre of the Bundelkhand and Purvaanchal regions, known for their imagery of the monsoon sky, the koel (cuckoo), the rains, and separation. Kajari songs are among the most ancient forms of Hindi folk music; Mirabai, Tulsidas, and later Ameer Khusro all contributed to this genre.

Women fast for the day, pray to Parvati and Shiva for marital happiness, and in the evening perform a puja using items like neem twigs, fresh maize, barley, and soil. The fast is broken after moonrise, once the moon has been viewed and worshipped. In some areas, small earthen pots filled with soil and wheat seedlings (grown over 7 days beforehand) are carried in procession and immersed in a river or pond — symbolising the end of the sowing season and offering the first-fruits to the earth.

Tradition & Practice
🌊
Third Teej of the Season
Kajari Teej is the third of the three monsoon women's festivals: Hariyali Teej (Shravana) → Haritalika Teej (Bhadrapada Shukla) → Kajari Teej (Bhadrapada Krishna). Together they span the entire monsoon season.

Kajari Folk Songs
The Kajari genre of Hindi folk music — sung by women in groups under the night sky — is named after this festival. Songs describe the monsoon rain, the waiting wife, the koel bird, and Radha in the season of longing.
🌱
Seed Pot Immersion
Women germinate wheat seeds in small earthen pots (jaari) for seven days before Kajari Teej. On the festival day these sprouted seedlings are immersed in a river — the first-fruits offering of the monsoon crop.
🙏
Parvati-Shiva Worship
Like all Teej festivals, Kajari Teej involves fasting and worshipping Parvati and Shiva. Married women pray for their husbands; unmarried girls pray for the right partner.
🌙
Moon Worship
The fast is broken only after the moon rises and is worshipped in the evening. Women offer water, flowers, and sindoor to the moon, then eat the meal prepared after the puja.
🌾
Bhojaree (Neem Twig Puja)
A distinctive element of Kajari Teej is the neem and maize offering — neem twigs representing health and purity are placed before the goddess. In some regions the festival is called Bhojaree from this offering.
