Labh Pancham 2030

Five days after Diwali, on Kartika Shukla Panchami, Gujarat celebrates Labh Pancham — literally "the fifth of profit." If Bestu Varas (the day after Diwali) is Gujarat's New Year, Labh Pancham is its commercial inauguration. In the Gujarati business tradition, Labh Pancham is considered the single most powerful muhurtha of the entire year for beginning any new venture: opening a factory, signing a business agreement, starting construction, inaugurating an office, or making a major investment. The reasoning is theological and deeply practical: the Diwali-to-Pancham period is ruled by Lakshmi's full presence in the world, and on the fifth day, her blessings are considered maximally available to those who invoke her through right action.

The Gujarati business calendar has its own logic. While the general Hindu world considers auspicious muhurthas (timings) throughout the year based on panchang calculations, Gujarati merchants have historically elevated two days above all others: Dhanteras (for the purchase of gold and silver) and Labh Pancham (for the commencement of commerce). On Labh Pancham, shops that have been closed since Diwali finally reopen — the intervening days being treated as a complete pause, a reset, a blank slate. The reopening itself is ceremonial: the shopkeeper arrives with a puja thali, draws a swastika at the entrance, offers incense and lamps to Ganesha and Lakshmi, distributes sweets to staff and customers, and makes the first sale of the new year a symbolic and auspicious one.

Beyond commerce, Labh Pancham has another name in the Jain tradition: Gyan Pancham — "the fifth of knowledge." Jains observe this day as a celebration of knowledge, scripture, and the written word. Books, manuscripts, and instruments of learning are worshipped. This dimension reflects the deep integration of Jain and Hindu communities in Gujarat's history — where the same calendar day means "profit" to the merchant and "knowledge" to the scholar. Both readings converge on a shared value: that what you begin on this day will grow and flourish. The day thus serves as a reminder that in the Gujarati tradition, knowledge and commerce have never been opposed — wisdom is the foundation of enduring prosperity.
