About

Maasi Chaturdasi

Maasi Chaturdasi is one of the six annual Abhishekam days observed for Lord Nataraja at the Chidambaram Temple, together known as Sri Nataraja Abhishekam. It falls in the Tamil month of Maasi, on the Shukla Chaturdashi tithi that prevails at dusk, while the Sun transits Kumbha rashi.

Maasi is itself associated with several major Shaiva observances, including Maha Shivaratri and Masi Magham — Maasi Chaturdasi at Chidambaram sits within this same sacred month, marking Lord Nataraja's evening abhishekam for the Kumbha solar transit, and completes the annual cycle of the six Nataraja Abhishekam days.

Devotees mark the day with a special dusk abhishekam of Lord Nataraja, along with recitation of Tevaram and Tiruvasagam hymns.

नटराजं नमस्तुभ्यं सभानायकमव्ययम्। चिदम्बरेश्वरं वन्दे शिवं शक्तिसमन्वितम्।।
Naṭarājaṃ namastubhyaṃ sabhānāyakamavyayam, cidambareśvaraṃ vande śivaṃ śaktisamanvitam.
"Salutations to Nataraja, the imperishable Lord of the Sabha — I bow to the Lord of Chidambaram, Shiva united with Shakti."
— Traditional Nataraja invocation
