Purattasi Chaturdasi is one of the six annual Abhishekam days observed for Lord Nataraja at the Chidambaram Temple, together known as Sri Nataraja Abhishekam. It falls in the Tamil month of Purattasi, on the Shukla Chaturdashi tithi that prevails at dusk, while the Sun transits Kanya rashi.

Purattasi is itself widely regarded as an auspicious month across Tamil Nadu, particularly associated with Perumal (Vishnu) worship on its Saturdays — Purattasi Chaturdasi at Chidambaram sits within this same sacred month, marking Lord Nataraja's evening abhishekam for the Kanya solar transit.

Devotees mark the day with a special dusk abhishekam of Lord Nataraja, along with recitation of Tevaram and Tiruvasagam hymns.
