About

Ratha Yatra

Ratha Yatra — the Chariot Festival — falls on the second day of Ashadha's bright fortnight and is the most spectacular public festival in the Hindu world, centred at Puri (Jagannath Dham) on the Odisha coast. On this day, Lord Jagannath (the Lord of the Universe), his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra are brought out of the Jagannath Temple and placed on three enormous wooden chariots that are then pulled by thousands of devotees through the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to the Gundicha Temple, 3 km away.

The three chariots are built fresh each year from sacred wood and are named Nandighosa (Jagannath's chariot — 45 feet tall, 16 wheels), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra's — 44 feet, 14 wheels), and Darpadalana (Subhadra's — 43 feet, 12 wheels). The chariots are covered in coloured canopies: yellow for Jagannath, red and green for Balabhadra, and black and red for Subhadra. Millions of people — formerly from all castes, classes, and now from all nations — pull the chariots with thick ropes.

The festival has a profound theological significance: when Jagannath leaves the temple on his chariot, he belongs to everyone — not just Brahmin priests. Traditionally the king of Puri (the Gajapati King) sweeps the road ahead of the chariot with a golden broom. Even outcasts and the poor could touch the lord's chariot — a fact noted by Muslim saint Salabega and Bhakti poet Kabir, who both wrote devotional verses to Jagannath. The word "Juggernaut" in English derives from "Jagannath" — a testament to how deeply this procession impressed medieval travellers.

नीलाद्रिनिलये नित्ये जगन्नाथ जगत्पते। दारुब्रह्मस्वरूपाय तुभ्यं देव नमो नमः।।
Niladri-nilaye nitye Jagannatha jagatpate, daru-brahma-svarupaya tubhyam deva namo namah.
"O Jagannath, eternal Lord of the Universe, dwelling on the Blue Mountain — O divine one in the form of sacred wood (daru-brahma) — salutations, salutations to you."
— Jagannath Ashtakam
Tradition & Practice
🎡
The Three Chariots
Three towering chariots built from neem wood pulled by lakhs of devotees. Nandighosa (Jagannath, 45 ft, 16 wheels), Taladhwaja (Balabhadra, 44 ft), and Darpadalana (Subhadra, 43 ft).
👑
King Sweeps the Road
The Gajapati King of Puri descends from his throne and sweeps the road ahead of the chariot with a golden broom — the supreme act of humility before the Lord. This ritual is called Chhera Pahara.
🌍
Lord of All
When Jagannath rides his chariot, he belongs to all humanity — no caste bar, no distance. The Bhakti tradition says Kabir and Salabega, both from outside the Brahmin fold, received his direct darshan here.
🏛️
Gundicha Temple
Jagannath stays at the Gundicha Temple for nine days — considered his aunt's home. On the ninth day (Bahuda Yatra) the chariots return to the main Jagannath temple.
🍚
Mahaprasad
The Mahaprasad of Puri Jagannath — cooked in the largest temple kitchen in the world — is eaten by all without distinction. It is considered supremely sacred, offered first to Goddess Vimala before reaching devotees.
🌐
Global Celebrations
Ratha Yatra is celebrated on all continents. ISKCON temples in London, New York, San Francisco, and Sydney conduct their own city processions that draw hundreds of thousands of participants annually.
