About

Rigveda Upakarma

Rigveda Upakarma is the annual renewal of the sacred thread (yajnopavita) observed by Rigveda-following households, traditionally anchored to Shravana Nakshatra in Shravana Shukla Paksha.

Per the Kalatattva-Vivechana's compilation verses, the primary timing is Shravana Nakshatra; if that is unavailable or afflicted by Grahana, Sankranti, or Guru/Shukra Asta, Panchami Tithi is taken next, then Hasta Nakshatra -- and if none of those work in Shravana masa, the same order is tried again in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha.

The table below shows the computed date -- both for those repeating the observance and for those performing it for the first time.
