About

Sharad Navaratri

Sharad Navaratri — the nine sacred nights of autumn — is the most widely celebrated of the four Navaratris, earning the title Maha Navaratri. It begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada (the first day of the bright fortnight in Ashwin) and culminates on Navami, followed by Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on the 10th day. For nine nights, the entire subcontinent turns its focus to the Goddess in her nine forms — the Navadurga — worshipping her through fast, prayer, dance, and spectacular public ceremony.

The nine nights take on dramatically different expressions across India. In Gujarat, Navaratri is synonymous with Garba and Dandiya Raas — circular folk dances performed around a central lamp or image of Amba Mata, lasting all night for nine nights. In West Bengal and Assam, it is Durga Puja — one of the world's great religious spectacles, with elaborate clay idols of Durga slaying Mahishasura installed in decorated pandals (temporary shrines) throughout every neighbourhood. In Karnataka, Mysore Dasara is the royal celebration — a 400-year tradition of elephant processions, illuminated palaces, and Nada Habba (state festival). In South India, Golu (Bommai Kolu) fills homes with tiered displays of dolls and figurines depicting divine stories.

At the heart of Navaratri is the worship of the nine forms of Devi — the Navadurga. Each day is dedicated to one form: Shailputri (mountain daughter), Brahmacharini (the ascetic), Chandraghanta (crescent-adorned), Kushmanda (creator of the cosmic egg), Skandamata (mother of Kartikeya), Katyayani (warrior goddess), Kaalratri (the dark night), Mahagauri (the radiant white), and Siddhidatri (bestower of supernatural powers). Devotees fast, offer flowers, and recite the Durga Saptashati — 700 verses in praise of the Goddess.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः।।
Yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṃsthitā, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.
"Salutations, salutations, salutations to that Goddess who abides in all beings in the form of power."
— Durga Saptashati
Tradition & Practice
🌺
9 Forms of Durga
Each of the nine nights is consecrated to one of the Navadurga: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. Devotees worship each form with a specific colour, flower, and food offering, and recite the corresponding chapter of the Durga Saptashati.
💃
Garba and Dandiya Raas
In Gujarat and much of North India, Navaratri nights mean Garba — circular devotional dance around a clay pot lamp — and Dandiya Raas, energetic stick dances. Both are performed in community grounds for all nine nights, drawing thousands of participants dressed in traditional chaniya choli (women) and kediyu (men) in vibrant colours.
🏮
Bengal's Durga Puja
In West Bengal, Durga Puja transforms the entire state for five days. Elaborate clay idols of the ten-armed Durga defeating Mahishasura are created by master artisans and installed in decorated community pandals. On Vijayadashami, the idols are immersed in rivers and lakes in the emotional visarjan ceremony.

Mysore Dasara
Mysore Dasara — 400 years old — is Karnataka's royal Navaratri. For ten days the Mysore Palace is illuminated with 100,000 bulbs every evening. On Vijayadashami, a golden throne procession with caparisoned elephants, folk performers, and thousands of soldiers winds through the city in the Jamboo Savari.
🪆
Bommai Kolu
In Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala, Golu (Bommai Kolu / Bommala Koluvu) is the tradition of setting up tiered wooden steps covered with cloth, on which hundreds of dolls — gods, goddesses, mythological scenes, village life — are arranged. Families invite neighbours to admire the display; children receive tambulam (betel leaves, turmeric, and gifts).
🌿
Fasting and Vrat Traditions
Navaratri fasting varies by region. Some devotees eat only one meal a day of sabudana (tapioca), fruit, and sendha namak (rock salt). Some fast completely on specific days. The Akhand Jyoti — a continuously burning lamp maintained for all nine days — is central to most household observances and must not be extinguished until the vrat is complete.
