About

Sharad Purnima

Sharad Purnima — also called Kojagiri Purnima, Raas Purnima, and Kumara Purnima — is the full moon of Ashwin, falling at the precise juncture when the summer rains have completely ended and the autumn sky achieves its greatest clarity. Of all the twelve full moons of the year, this one is considered the most luminous and the most beautiful — the moon is said to be at its closest, its light purest, its beauty most complete. Ancient texts describe the moonbeams on this night as carrying healing nectar (amrit) that descends to earth.

The most beloved observance of Sharad Purnima is the preparation of moonlit kheer — a thick rice pudding cooked with milk, sugar, and cardamom, placed outdoors on a clean surface and left under the open sky throughout the night so the moon's rays fall directly on it. By morning, the kheer is believed to have absorbed the lunar nectar and to carry healing properties. Devotees eat this prasad at dawn. The tradition is especially strong in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

In Vrindavan and the Vaishnava tradition, Sharad Purnima is the night of Krishna's Raas Leela with the Gopis — the mystical circular dance that stretched beyond time itself as the divine and the devoted merged in love. Simultaneously, in the Lakshmi tradition observed mainly in Bengal and Maharashtra (as Kojagiri), the goddess herself is said to roam the earth on this night calling out Ko Jagarti? — “Who is awake?” — bestowing her blessings on those who stay awake, worship her, and keep a lamp burning until dawn.

सौम्यमूर्ते सदा सौम्य महाशुभद मङ्गल। शरत्काले विशेषेण प्रसीद परमेश्वर।।
Saumyamūrte sadā saumya mahāśubhada maṅgala, śaratkāle viśeṣeṇa prasīda parameśvara.
"O gentle-faced one, always gentle, greatly auspicious, bestower of blessings — especially in the autumn season, be pleased, O supreme Lord."

Ko Jagarti? — Lakshmi Roams
On Kojagiri Purnima, Lakshmi is said to wander the earth from dusk to dawn asking Ko Jagarti? (Who is awake?). Those who stay awake, light a lamp, and worship her receive her direct blessings — prosperity, health, and grace. Sleeping through this night is considered a missed opportunity. Card games and dice were traditionally played to stay awake.
🍚
Moonlit Kheer
The signature observance: cook kheer (rice pudding with milk, sugar, saffron, cardamom) and place it outdoors in a clean vessel before sunset. Leave it uncovered under the open sky so the moon's rays fall directly into it all night. The kheer absorbs the healing lunar nectar (amrit) and is eaten as prasad at dawn.
🎶
Krishna's Raas Leela
In Vaishnava tradition, Sharad Purnima is Raas Purnima — the night Krishna performed the cosmic Raas Leela with the Gopis on the banks of the Yamuna in Vrindavan. Each Gopi believed Krishna was dancing only with her — a metaphor for the divine being simultaneously present and personal to every soul. Vrindavan's Raas Utsav on this night is legendary.
🌙
Healing Moonlight
Ayurveda recognises the Ashwin full moon as the most potent lunar night for receiving lunar pranic energy. Practitioners recommend open-sky meditation, moonbathing, and consuming moon-charged water or foods. Certain herbs and foods are left outdoors to absorb the moonlight — a practice described in classical Ayurvedic texts.
🎲
Kojagiri Purnima in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, Kojagiri is celebrated as a community stay-awake night. Families and friends gather after dinner, play card games and board games to stay awake until dawn, and share moonlit kheer. Poha (flattened rice), coconut, and seasonal fruits like pomegranate are part of the spread. The atmosphere is festive rather than solemn.
📅
Kartika Month Beginning
Sharad Purnima is also the gateway to Kartika — one of the holiest months in the Hindu calendar. The day after (Kartika Krishna Pratipada) begins a month of special observances including Tulsi puja, Kartika Deepam (lamp lighting), and the approach of Diwali. Sharad Purnima is both a culmination and a threshold.
