Kojagiri Purnima

Kojagiri Purnima — the full moon of Ashwin — takes its name from the Sanskrit question Ko Jagarti?, meaning “Who is awake?” On this most luminous full moon of the year, Goddess Lakshmi herself is said to descend from Vaikuntha and walk the earth from dusk to dawn, looking into every household, every window, every doorstep, asking that same question. She bestows her blessings of wealth, health, and prosperity on every home where a light burns and a devotee is awake in her honour.

This tradition is especially alive in Maharashtra, where Kojagiri is a beloved community festival. After the evening puja, families gather with friends and neighbours to play card games, tell stories, and stay awake through the night — all while the famous moonlit kheer sits outdoors in a clean vessel absorbing the healing moonlight. The moon on Kojagiri night is considered the most beautiful and most powerful of the year — ancient texts say its rays carry amrit (divine nectar) that heals the body and quiets the mind. The kheer, having absorbed this nectar all night, is eaten at dawn as a sacred prasad.

In Bengal, the same festival is called Kojagari Lakshmi Puja — one of the year's most important Lakshmi observances. Elaborate Lakshmi idols are installed and worshipped in homes and community halls with flowers, fruits, and the singing of Lakshmi Panchali (devotional songs). In Odisha, it is Kumara Purnima — young women bathe at dawn and pray to the moon for good husbands. In Vrindavan, this night is Raas Purnima — the night of Krishna's eternal dance with the Gopis, a cosmic leela that began on this full moon and has, in some traditions, never ended.

Ko Jagarti? — The Question
Lakshmi roams the earth on this night asking Ko Jagarti? — “Who is awake?” This is not just a legend but a spiritual invitation: keep a lamp burning, stay awake in prayer or celebration, and Lakshmi notices you. Sleeping through this night means missing her annual visit to your home.
🍚
Moonlit Kheer
Cook kheer (rice pudding with milk, sugar, cardamom, saffron) and place it in a clean vessel outdoors before sunset. Let it sit under the open sky all night so the moonbeams — believed to carry amrit (nectar) — fall directly into it. Eat it at dawn as prasad. This is the most distinctive ritual of Kojagiri Purnima.
🎲
Stay-Awake Night
The entire purpose of Kojagiri is to stay awake until dawn. In Maharashtra, this means gatherings of friends and family playing cards, dice, and board games. Songs, storytelling, and festive food keep the atmosphere lively. Poha, coconut, pomegranate, and seasonal fruits are spread across the table alongside the moonlit kheer.
🪔
Lakshmi Puja (Bengal)
In Bengal, Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is one of the year's most important Lakshmi observances. Beautiful clay images of Lakshmi with her owl are installed in homes and pandals. Women sing Lakshmi Panchali — devotional hymns — and the puja includes alpana (floor patterns drawn in rice paste) around the goddess.
🌙
Healing Moonlight
The Ashwin full moon is considered the most medically powerful of the year in Ayurveda. The moon is at its closest and most luminous, its light cooling and healing. Open-sky meditation and moonbathing on Kojagiri night are traditional practices for calming the mind, improving eyesight, and restoring vitality.
🌸
Kumara Purnima (Odisha)
In Odisha, this same full moon is Kumara Purnima — dedicated to young unmarried women. Girls bathe before dawn while the moon is still visible, wear new clothes, and offer prayers to the moon, Chandra, for a good husband and a blessed life. Sand sculptures and intricate floor designs mark the celebration.
