🙏 Sutak (Grahana Vedha)

Religious fasting begins 4 Prahara (approx. 12 hours) before the solar eclipse. Sutak for children, elderly and the sick begins 3 hours before the eclipse.

🌿 During the Eclipse

Avoid eating food during Sutak and the eclipse itself. Place Darbha (Kusha) grass around food and water to purify them. Chant your Ishta Devata mantra or Gayatri Mantra — Japa Mala not required.

🪔 After the Eclipse

Take a bath (snan) after the eclipse ends. Donate money, food or clothes to those in need (Daan-Punya). Perform puja and offer prayers to your deity.

⚕ Exemptions

Sutak rules are generally relaxed for pregnant women, the seriously ill, and those under medical treatment. Consult a learned pandit for guidance based on your specific situation.

Surya Grahan · Sacred Knowledge

Solar Eclipse in Hinduism — Surya Grahan

A solar eclipse — Surya Grahan (सूर्य ग्रहण) — holds profound significance in Hindu dharma. According to the Puranas, the celestial serpent Rahu seizes the Sun during an eclipse, momentarily darkening the world. This cosmic drama symbolises the eternal struggle between light and shadow, and the transient victory of darkness before Surya reappears in full glory.

Ancient rishis and astronomers of the Vedic tradition tracked solar eclipses with remarkable precision. The Surya Siddhanta, composed over a thousand years ago, describes the mechanism of solar eclipses in ways that closely align with modern astronomy — a testament to the sophistication of Vedic science.

Types of Solar Eclipses

Grahana Vedha — The Sacred Window

The Grahana Vedha (or Sutak) is the period of spiritual observance that begins before the eclipse. For a solar eclipse, Vedha begins 4 Prahara (roughly 12 hours) before first contact. During Vedha, cooked food is considered impure and one should refrain from eating. Placing Darbha (Kusha) grass in water vessels and food containers is believed to purify them.

Astronomical Precision

These timings are computed from the Besselian Elements published in NASA's Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses (Espenak & Meeus, 2006). The calculations account for your location's latitude, longitude and timezone to give you accurate local contact times — the same method used in the published eclipse pages.

Solar eclipse has a religious importance in hinduism, Sutaka (Vedha) starts before 4 prahara before Solar Eclipse.

One shouldn't eat during eclipse vedha till end of eclipse. This period is also known as Grahana Sutak. However, this is not applicable to pregnant and patients under medical treatment, or people with medical conditions. You can keep darbha grass around the home. After the eclipse take bath, and if possible try to donate money to poor and help needy people or related organization. You can chant your ista devata mantra, as well as gayatri mantra during eclipse, you can do this without using chanting beads (Japa Mala).

When the Moon orbits Earth, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth. When this happens, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the Sun, or a solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow onto Earth.

There are three main types of solar eclipses:

  • Total solar eclipse: A total solar eclipse is visible from a small area on Earth. The people who see the total eclipse are in the center of the Moon’s shadow when it hits Earth. The sky becomes very dark, as if it were night. For a total eclipse to occur, the Sun, Moon and Earth must be in a direct line.
  • Partial solar eclipse: This happens when the Sun, Moon and Earth are not exactly aligned. The Sun appears to have a dark shadow on a small part of its surface.
  • Annular (an-yə-lər) solar eclipse: An annular eclipse happens when the Moon is farthest from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away, it seems smaller. It does not block the entire view of the Sun. The Moon in front of the Sun looks like a dark disk on top of a larger Sun-colored disk. This creates what looks like a ring around the Moon.
