Surya Grahan — Dates, Timings & Sutak for Bangalore — 2023 — Powered by NASA JPL Ephemeris
Religious fasting begins 4 Prahara (approx. 12 hours) before the solar eclipse. Sutak for children, elderly and the sick begins 3 hours before the eclipse.
Avoid eating food during Sutak and the eclipse itself. Place Darbha (Kusha) grass around food and water to purify them. Chant your Ishta Devata mantra or Gayatri Mantra — Japa Mala not required.
Take a bath (snan) after the eclipse ends. Donate money, food or clothes to those in need (Daan-Punya). Perform puja and offer prayers to your deity.
Sutak rules are generally relaxed for pregnant women, the seriously ill, and those under medical treatment. Consult a learned pandit for guidance based on your specific situation.
A solar eclipse — Surya Grahan (सूर्य ग्रहण) — holds profound significance in Hindu dharma. According to the Puranas, the celestial serpent Rahu seizes the Sun during an eclipse, momentarily darkening the world. This cosmic drama symbolises the eternal struggle between light and shadow, and the transient victory of darkness before Surya reappears in full glory.
Ancient rishis and astronomers of the Vedic tradition tracked solar eclipses with remarkable precision. The Surya Siddhanta, composed over a thousand years ago, describes the mechanism of solar eclipses in ways that closely align with modern astronomy — a testament to the sophistication of Vedic science.
The Grahana Vedha (or Sutak) is the period of spiritual observance that begins before the eclipse. For a solar eclipse, Vedha begins 4 Prahara (roughly 12 hours) before first contact. During Vedha, cooked food is considered impure and one should refrain from eating. Placing Darbha (Kusha) grass in water vessels and food containers is believed to purify them.
These timings are computed from the Besselian Elements published in NASA's Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses (Espenak & Meeus, 2006). The calculations account for your location's latitude, longitude and timezone to give you accurate local contact times — the same method used in the published eclipse pages.

When the Moon orbits Earth, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth. When this happens, the Moon blocks the light of the Sun from reaching Earth. This causes an eclipse of the Sun, or a solar eclipse. During a solar eclipse, the Moon casts a shadow onto Earth.
There are three main types of solar eclipses:
