What is Panchanga Sravanam?

Ugadi stands for Yuga (Age) + Aadi (Beginning) — Yugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar. It is said that Lord Brahma started the creation on this day. Ugadi falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada every year. In Maharashtra it is known as Gudi Padwa. Sindhis call it Cheti Chand. Hindu Vasantha Navaratri also starts from this day. It is a very auspicious day — one of the sāde-tīna muhūrtha. It is celebrated with great pomp, especially in South Indian states. Ugadi pacchadi (ugadi chutney), made from tamarind, raw mangoes, jaggery and neem flowers, is a noteworthy item during this festival. The meaning is that all joys and sorrows must be treated alike throughout the year.

This auspicious day is also known for Panchanga Sravanam, which is recited mainly by purohits and scholars. Panchangam is the Hindu almanac. It contains enormous mathematical work on the movement of celestial bodies. The ancient Vedic sages have explained astronomical phenomena and formulated many principles. The literal meaning of panchangam is five limbs (Pancha-angas): Tithi, Vaara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana.

Traditionally, on the day of Ugadi, people visit the temple and listen to the panchangam recited by a Siddhanthi (scholar). It is a social function where the scholar makes general predictions about the coming year — aspects of the country, different places and the lives of people based on their rāśis. Politicians and businessmen pay close interest in the Panchanga Sravanam to know their prospects for the year ahead.

Sloka — Importance of Listening to the Panchangam

Meaning: "Panchangam contains all auspicious qualities. It is a weapon that destroys evil, dispels bad dreams and negative qualities, and gives the purity of bathing in the Ganges. A person receives the merit of donating a cow; longevity increases; good nature is attained; virtuous children are born. The panchangam, a guide of all good qualities, must be heard by everyone."

Thus, listening to the Panchangam and following it cultivates good habits. The commoners must use this Vedic science to improve their living standards. Additional information can be found here.
