Sri Jayanti (Munitraya Sampradaya of Sri Vaishnava)

Sri Jayanti is the Munitraya Sampradaya's observance of the birth of Lord Krishna, determined by a rule distinct from the more widely followed Smarta and Vaishnava (ISKCON) Janmashtami calculations. Rather than anchoring to the lunar Bhadrapada month alone, Sri Jayanti additionally requires the Sun to be in sidereal Simha (Leo) at the time — a solar (Saura) condition layered on top of the lunar Krishna Paksha Ashtami tithi and Rohini nakshatra.

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत। अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्।।

Sun in Simha

Sri Jayanti's defining condition: the Sun must be in sidereal Simha (Leo) — a Saura (solar) gate the Smarta/Vaishnava Janmashtami calculations do not apply.

Ashtami United with Rohini

Krishna Paksha Ashtami tithi must unite with Rohini nakshatra — at sunrise, through the day and night, or at moonrise, per the Munitraya rule hierarchy.

Saptami & Krittika Vedha

If Saptami still prevails at Ashtami's dawn, or Krittika still prevails at Rohini's dawn, the day is considered afflicted (vedha) and the rule hierarchy resolves which day to observe.

When Both Are Afflicted

If both Ashtami and Rohini carry vedha, the Munitraya tradition does not abandon the vrata — Janmashtami and Sri Jayanti are observed on two separate, suitable days.

Sri Jayanti vs Janmashtami

Both observances usually share the same base Ashtami tithi, so Sri Jayanti often falls on or near Janmashtami's date — but the Simha and Rohini conditions can shift it to a different day.
