Tamil Hanuman Jayanti 2024

Tamil Hanuman Jayanti is the South Indian observance of Lord Hanuman's (Anjaneya's) birth, distinct from the Chaitra Purnima-based Hanuman Jayanti observed in North India. It falls in the Tamil month of Margazhi, on the Amavasya (new moon) that coincides with the Sun's transit through Dhanu rashi.

Margazhi is regarded as one of the most sacred months of the Tamil calendar, associated with early-morning devotion, the singing of the Thiruppavai and Thiruvempavai, and visits to temples before dawn. Tamil Hanuman Jayanti falls within this auspicious month, and where the day's ruling nakshatra is Moola — Hanuman's birth star in this tradition — that occurrence is given precedence.

Devotees mark the day with visits to Anjaneya/Hanuman temples, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and other stotras, and the same spirit of fasting and devotion associated with Hanuman Jayanti observances elsewhere in India.
