Vaikasi Visakam celebrates the birth of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya, Subramanya), falling on the day Vishakha nakshatra rules sunrise during the Sun's transit through Vrishabha rasi — the Tamil month of Vaikasi.
Along with Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram, Vaikasi Visakam is one of the principal festival days of the Tamil Saiva Murugan tradition, marking the occasion of his birth to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati as the commander of the celestial armies, born to destroy the demon Soorapadman.
The day is celebrated with special abhishekams, processions, and festivities at Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu — most notably at Tiruchendur, Swamimalai, and Palani — as well as at Murugan shrines wherever Tamil communities have settled.
