Nine Nights of Devi — Chaitra Shukla Pratipada to Navami
Vasant Navaratri — also called Chaitra Navaratri — is the spring nine-night festival dedicated to the Goddess Devi, observed from the 1st to the 9th day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra. It begins on the same day as Yugadi and Gudi Padwa (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, the Hindu New Year) and culminates on Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama. Unlike the more widely celebrated Sharad Navaratri of autumn, Vasant Navaratri is the older and traditionally more Vedic observance — the period when spring energy is at its most potent and Devi's blessings are sought for the new year ahead.
Each of the nine nights is dedicated to one of the Navadurga — nine forms of the Goddess: Day 1 to Shailputri (daughter of the mountain), Day 2 to Brahmacharini (the ascetic), Day 3 to Chandraghanta (bearing the moon-bell), Day 4 to Kushmanda (creator of the universe), Day 5 to Skandamata (mother of Kartikeya), Day 6 to Katyayani (the warrior), Day 7 to Kaalratri (the dark night, destroying evil), Day 8 to Mahagauri (the brilliantly white), and Day 9 to Siddhidatri (bestower of supernatural powers). Daily puja, fasting, and the recitation of the Durga Saptashati (700 verses in praise of the Goddess) are the core practices.
The culmination on Ram Navami makes Vasant Navaratri unique in the Hindu calendar: it bridges the worship of Shakti (the Goddess) and Vishnu's avatar Rama, two of the most beloved divine streams in Hinduism. Legend holds that Sage Valmiki prescribed the Devi puja to Rama before the final battle against Ravana — an akala (untimely) Navaratri in autumn — but Vasant Navaratri is the original spring observance that Rama himself would have grown up celebrating. The overlap creates a rare devotional confluence that draws worshippers from both Shaiva-Shakta and Vaishnava traditions together under one roof for nine sacred nights.
