Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari is one of the most revered divine figures in the Komati (Vaishya / Arya Vaishya) community of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. She was a 16-year-old princess of Penugonda — a prosperous city of Komati merchants — renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and piety. When an invading king, Viswanatha Reddy, demanded her hand in marriage after conquering the surrounding territory, Vasavi Kanyaka refused. She would not be surrendered, bargained, or given in compromise. Her answer was absolute.

Rather than allow herself or her family to be dishonoured, Vasavi Kanyaka performed Atma Arpana — supreme self-offering. Along with 102 relatives and community members who chose to follow her rather than submit, she entered a great fire in an act of voluntary sacrifice. The total number who died with her is counted as 103 souls — Vasavi herself and 102 others. In the moment of her sacrifice, she is said to have attained divine status, blessing the Komati community with her eternal protection. Kings who had witnessed her courage and the aftermath of her sacrifice reportedly wept and built a temple in her honour.

The Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari temple at Penugonda (West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh) is her primary shrine, and it is a major pilgrimage site for Vaishya communities across Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Her festival — Vasavi Devi Atma Arpana Day — is observed with deep reverence rather than celebration: fasting, prayer, the telling of her story, and reflection on her courage. She is worshipped as a virgin goddess (kanyaka), a protective mother, and the patron deity of the merchant community.
