Vishu 2025

Vishu — Kerala's new year — falls on the day the sun enters the zodiac sign of Mesha (Aries), known as Mesha Sankranti. The name Vishu comes from the Sanskrit vishuvam, meaning equal — referring to the ancient belief that on this day, the day and night are of equal length (a solar equinox tradition). For Kerala, this solar crossing marks the beginning of a new cycle of time, a new agricultural year, and a renewal of divine grace flowing into every home.

The most defining ritual of Vishu is the Vishukani — the first sight of the morning. The night before, the eldest woman of the household carefully arranges an auspicious collection of items in a large bell-metal uruli (vessel): a golden cucumber (kani vellarikka), coconuts, jackfruit, betel leaves and areca nut, fresh rice, coins, gold jewellery, yellow flowers (konna — Indian laburnum, Cassia fistula), a lit lamp (nilavilakku), and a small mirror. She covers it and wakes before dawn to light the lamp. Each family member is then led to the room with eyes closed and opens them only when standing before the Vishukani — so the very first thing they see in the new year is this auspicious arrangement. The belief is that what you see first on Vishu sets the tone of your entire year.

Vishu is also celebrated with two cherished traditions. Kaineetam — the gift of money — is given by elders to children, younger family members, and household staff. The gift must be of new currency; the amount matters less than the act of giving. And Sadya — the grand feast on a banana leaf — brings extended family together for a meal of 20-30 dishes including parippu (dal), sambar, rasam, avial, thoran, olan, pickle, payasam, and pappad. The same feast coincides with Tamil New Year (Puthandu), which falls on the same solar event.
