About

Yajur Upakarma

Yajur Upakarma (also known as Shravani Upakarma or, in Tamil, Aavani Avittam) is the annual renewal of the sacred thread (yajnopavita) observed by Yajurveda-following households, traditionally performed on Shravana Purnima.

The exact date can shift from year to year and from branch to branch of the Yajurveda -- Shukla Yajurveda and the Krishna Yajurveda's Baudhayana and Apastamba Sutras each have their own timing conventions, and the date can move further depending on eclipses, Sankranti, and planetary combustion on the primary day.

The cards above show the computed date for each branch, for your city and year -- both for those repeating the observance and for those performing it for the first time. For the full scriptural reasoning behind these dates, see the linked article.

Upakarma Nirnaya (the determination of the correct date) is genuinely intricate -- across the centuries, different sampradayas and acharyas have arrived at different rules, and at mypanchang.com we have tried to capture as many of these views as possible here. That is why you may sometimes see more than one date for the same branch. Where they differ, please follow the convention observed by your own family or sampradaya.
