Ratha Saptami — Surya Jayanti

Ratha Saptami — the 7th day (Saptami) of the bright fortnight of Magha — is celebrated as the birth anniversary of the Sun god, Surya Deva. The name combines ratha (chariot) and saptami (seventh): according to the Mahabharata and the Bhavishya Purana, on this day Surya's chariot, drawn by seven horses representing the seven colours of sunlight (VIBGYOR), begins to gain full speed on its northward journey (Uttarayana). The Sun, which appeared to pause at the winter solstice, now accelerates toward the spring equinox, bringing warmth, longer days, and the promise of the harvest season.

The central ritual of Ratha Saptami is the placement of seven Arka leaves (Calotropis gigantea, the crown flower plant) on the body before the sunrise bath. One leaf on the head, two on the shoulders, two on the knees, and two on the feet. The bather then pours water over themselves at the precise moment of sunrise while reciting the Surya Ashtakam or the Aditya Hridayam. The Arka plant is sacred to Surya — its flowers resemble the rays of the sun, and its sap is used in Ayurvedic preparations for skin and bone ailments, diseases that Surya is believed to cure.

Ratha Saptami is observed with special enthusiasm in the great Surya temples of India: Konark in Odisha, Modhera in Gujarat, Arasavalli in Andhra Pradesh, and Suryanar Kovil in Tamil Nadu attract thousands of pilgrims on this day. The Aditya Hridayam — the hymn that Sage Agastya taught to Rama on the battlefield of Lanka to give him strength to defeat Ravana — is considered the supreme prayer for this occasion. In many homes, a model of the seven-horse chariot is drawn in rangoli at the threshold, the Sun's chariot racing across the morning sky.

जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम्। तमोरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम्॥
Japā-kusuma-saṃkāśaṃ kāśyapeyaṃ mahādyutim, tamoriṃ sarva-pāpa-ghnaṃ praṇato'smi divākaram.
"I bow to the sun, red as the hibiscus flower, son of Kashyapa, supremely radiant, the enemy of darkness, the destroyer of all sins."
— Surya Ashtakam

The 7 Horses of the Chariot
Surya's chariot is drawn by seven horses named after the seven metres of Vedic poetry: Gayatri, Brihati, Ushnik, Jagati, Trishtubh, Anushtubh, and Pankti. They also represent the seven colours of the visible spectrum (VIBGYOR). The number seven recurs throughout the Ratha Saptami observance — seven Arka leaves, the 7th tithi, seven horses — signifying wholeness and the completion of a cosmic cycle.
🌿
Arka Leaf Ritual
Before bathing at sunrise, devotees place seven Arka (Calotropis) leaves on the body — one on the crown of the head, one on each shoulder, one on each knee, and one on each foot — symbolising the seven horses of the Sun's chariot. The Arka plant is intrinsically linked to Surya: its milky white flowers carry purple centres resembling the sun's disk, and it thrives in harsh sunny conditions, mirroring Surya's indomitable energy.

Surya Jayanti — Birth of the Sun
The Bhavishya Purana records that Surya was born to the sage Kashyapa and Aditi on this Saptami tithi, earning him the names Kashyapeya (son of Kashyapa) and Aditya (son of Aditi). Temples dedicated to Surya hold special abhisheka, ashtottara-shatanamavali (108-name recitation), and Surya Namaskar sessions from before sunrise. The Aditya Hridayam and Surya Ashtakam are recited 108 times by devoted worshippers.

Uttarayana Connection
Uttarayana begins at Makar Sankranti (when the sun enters Capricorn), but the Sun is said to be moving at reduced speed initially. On Ratha Saptami — about six weeks later — the Sun's chariot reaches full speed on its northward path. Daylight is noticeably longer, temperatures are rising, and the earth is awakening from winter. Scriptures say the spiritual benefit of sunrise prayers is multiplied many times over during this acceleration phase.

Healing Power of Surya
Surya is the lord of health, vitality, and eyesight in Vedic astrology. Ratha Saptami is believed to be a particularly powerful day for healing rituals: bathing in a river or the sea at sunrise, taking a brief fast and breaking it with rice cooked with jaggery (Pongal / sakkarai pongal), and offering Arghya (water with flowers) to the rising sun. Skin diseases, eye ailments, and bone weakness are traditionally placed under Surya's domain.
🧘
Surya Namaskar on This Day
Performing the 12-step Surya Namaskar at sunrise on Ratha Saptami is considered especially auspicious — each step corresponds to one of the twelve Adityas (solar forms), and the sequence is recited with the respective name (Om Mitraya namah, Om Ravaye namah, etc.). Many temples and yoga centres hold community Surya Namaskar sessions on this day, sometimes attracting hundreds of participants who greet the strengthening winter sun together.
