Shravana Shukra Vaara — the boon-giving Lakshmi's Friday vrat
Varalakshmi Vratam — the vrat of boon-granting Lakshmi — is observed on the Friday immediately before the full moon of Shravana (Shravana Purnima). Vara means boon, and Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, auspiciousness, and abundance. On this day, the goddess is worshipped specifically in her most generous form — the one who fulfils wishes and grants the eight forms of wealth (Ashtalakshmi) to devoted women who observe the vrat with sincerity.
The origin of the vrat is told through the story of Charumati, a devoted wife in the city of Kundina. Pleased by her devotion, Goddess Lakshmi appeared to her in a dream and instructed her to observe the Varalakshmi Vrat, worship a sacred pot (kalasha) as her living embodiment, and tie a golden thread around it. Charumati shared the instructions with the other women of her city. All who observed the vrat were blessed with prosperity, health, and happiness — and from that time, the tradition spread across South India. The story is told during the vrat puja as a katha (sacred narrative).
Varalakshmi Vratam is most widely observed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and among Telugu and Kannada communities worldwide. It is primarily a women's festival — observed by married women (sumangalis) who fast, perform elaborate kalasha puja, tie a sacred golden thread (called Varalakshmi), and prepare special neivedyam (food offerings). The puja brings the concentrated blessings of all eight forms of Lakshmi into the home: Dhana (wealth), Dhanya (grain), Dhairya (courage), Gaja (elephants/strength), Santana (children), Vijaya (victory), Vidya (knowledge), and Vara (boon-giving).
