Somavati Amavasya

Somavati Amavasya is the rare occasion when the no-moon (Amavasya) tithi coincides with Monday. The Dharmasindhu holds this weekday-tithi yoga to be valid when it prevails for at least one muhurta in relation to aparahna kala (the fourth of the day's five parts). It is considered highly auspicious for fasting, pitru tarpan (ancestral offerings), worship of Shiva, and circumambulating (parikrama) a peepal tree — married women traditionally observe this vrata for the wellbeing of their husband and family.
