About

Buddha Jayanti

Buddha Jayanti — also called Buddha Purnima or Vesak — falls on the full moon of Vaishakha (April-May) and is the holiest day in Buddhism. It carries the rare distinction of marking three events in the life of Gautama Buddha on the same lunar day: his birth at Lumbini (c. 563 BCE), his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, and his mahaparinirvana (passing into nirvana) at Kushinagar.

In the Hindu tradition, Gautama Buddha is venerated as the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu. The Srimad Bhagavata Purana and Agni Purana include him in the dashavatara (ten incarnations), and temples across India — especially in Odisha, Bengal, and South India — perform special puja for Vishnu-Buddha on this day.

Across Buddhist communities worldwide, the day is observed by visiting monasteries, offering flowers, incense, and lamps at shrines, and listening to the Dhamma. Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Mahabodhi tree, and Sarnath, where he gave his first teaching (the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta), are thronged by pilgrims.

In India, Buddha Jayanti is a national public holiday. The government organises commemorations at the National Museum, the Mahabodhi Society leads prayers at Bodh Gaya, and the Tibetan community celebrates at Dharamsala.

बुद्धं शरणं गच्छामि। धम्मं शरणं गच्छामि। संघं शरणं गच्छामि।
Buddham saranam gacchami. Dhammam saranam gacchami. Sangham saranam gacchami.
"I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Dhamma. I take refuge in the Sangha."
— Tisarana — the Triple Refuge, Pali Canon
Tradition & Practice
☸️
Triple Sacred Day
Vaishakha Purnima is uniquely sacred because the birth, enlightenment, and mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha all occurred on the same full-moon day, separated by decades.
🌳
The Bodhi Tree
Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment while sitting under a Peepal (Ficus religiosa) tree at Bodh Gaya — revered ever since as the Bodhi tree. Cuttings from it have been propagated to Buddhist temples worldwide.
🕉️
Ninth Vishnu Avatar
Hindu scripture includes Buddha as the ninth avatar of Vishnu in the dashavatara. Temples in Puri, Gaya, and parts of South India worship him in this form on Buddha Purnima.
🙏
Dana and Sila
Buddhist communities observe dana (generosity — offering food, robes, medicine to monks) and sila (the Five Precepts) especially intensely on Vesak day as a practice of merit-making.
🕯️
Lamp Offerings
Thousands of oil lamps and candles are lit at Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Lumbini, and Kushinagar — the four sacred Buddhist sites — illuminating the night to honour the light of the Dhamma.
🏛️
National Holiday
Buddha Jayanti is a gazetted public holiday in India. The President and Prime Minister traditionally attend commemorations at Bodh Gaya and the National Museum in New Delhi.
